Tatting FLOW

Tatting is a simple sequence of rings and chains, created with just a shuttle and thread. Yet it is more than a craft. It is a journey — a way to connect, to grow, and to nurture wellbeing. Centuries old, yet full of new life. Old craft. New soul.

F – Friendship

Tatting opens doors to connection. Beyond shared projects and workshops online, many tatting enthusiasts actively exchange tips, patterns, and inspiration in Facebook groups and other virtual communities. But the magic doesn’t stop there—there are also delightful in-person gatherings, from relaxed afternoon sessions over coffee to longer weekend meet-ups in beautiful, tranquil settings. These moments provide a chance not only to practise the craft together but also to form lasting friendships, sometimes between just a few people, that continue well beyond the session. Whether online or face-to-face, the tatting community thrives on shared creativity, support, and connection.

L – Learning

Every new pattern, every intricate ring, teaches patience, adaptability, and focus. Learning through tatting doesn’t just improve the craft—it develops skills that are useful in everyday life, from problem-solving and planning to maintaining concentration under pressure. These benefits are lifelong: learning is not limited to school, and practising tatting can help keep the mind agile at any age. It’s a way to continually challenge yourself and build confidence in your abilities.

O – Organisation

Tatting develops practical organisational skills. Planning patterns, preparing threads and materials, and working through pattern sequences exercises a systematic approach and attention to detail. Practising these skills regularly strengthens the ability to organise tasks, manage time effectively, and maintain focus in other areas of life. The discipline and structure cultivated through tatting are directly applicable to work, study, household management, and personal projects. These abilities become habits, making it easier to approach challenges efficiently and confidently.

W – Wellbeing

The rhythmic, repetitive motions involved in tatting—such as the movement of fingers and hands—can help centre the mind and soothe the body. Engaging in this craft creates a space to slow down, breathe, and be present. Research indicates that rhythmic handcrafts can reduce stress, improve mood, and foster a sense of calm resilience. Completing a tatting project brings a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. Being part of creative communities provides opportunities for social connection and support, further enhancing emotional wellbeing. Sharing handmade items with loved ones can strengthen bonds and create moments of joy. These experiences contribute to a holistic sense of wellbeing, encompassing mental, emotional, and social health.

Old craft. New soul. Each piece of lace carries history, yet introduces something new. Every chain and loop is an opportunity to nurture friendships, sharpen skills, strengthen organisation, and foster wellbeing. This is the FLOW of tatting. It brings calm, growth, and connection into life.
